Recommendations and awards for Madame Grès

American Designer Bill Blass was once asked whether or not fashion design was an art. "No, it's a craft," he replied. "Sometimes a creative one, sometimes a technical one. It only becomes an art in the hands of Mme Grès or Balenciaga."

She dressed the great women of her time: Maria Casarès, Jackie Kennedy, Grace de Monaco, la duchesse d'Orléans et Marlène Dietrich to name only a few or her distinguished customers.

In 1947, she became Officer of the "Légion d'Honneur".

In 1973 she was elected President of the French Haute-Couture.

In 1976 she was given the first "Dé d'or de la haute Couture".

In 1978, she receives the "Best" award in Rome by the Camera nazionale dell'alta Italiana.

She was awarded "The most elegant woman of the World" in 1980.

She was named "the greatest living couturier" in 1988 by Vogue History of the 20th Century Fashion.

Madame Grès is said to have inspired many of todays fashion designers as Azzedine Alaïa, Issey Miyake, Valentino, Jeanne Muir, Norma Kamali, Mary McFadden.

From September to November 1994, a retrospective of Madame Grès is organised by the Metropololitan Museum of Art in New York.

From June 2004 to January 2005 an important exposition of the remaining masterpieces of Madame Grès is organised by the Musée of Bourgoin-Jallieu under the direction of Brigitte Riboreau.
The exhibition is called "Madame Grès, entre ombre et lumière"

A proponent of the French neoclassic style, she seemed to have found unlimited inspiration from distant lands, perhaps revealing a call from far away. Stylistic influences from Chinese pagodas to Japanese origamis, and from saris to icon archangels were evident throughout her work.
